What is RDI?
(Relationship Development Intervention)
When parents first enter the autism journey, they often hear about many therapies — speech therapy, occupational therapy, behavioural programs and more.
Among these approaches, many families eventually come across something called RDI (Relationship Development Intervention).
So what exactly is RDI?
Understanding RDI®
RDI stands for Relationship Development Intervention.
It is a developmental approach that helps autistic individuals build the ability to think flexibly, regulate emotions, and learn through relationships.
Many traditional therapies focus mainly on teaching skills or reducing behaviours.
RDI focuses on something deeper:
Helping the child develop the ability to learn from everyday interactions and experiences.
Why Relationships Are Important
Children naturally learn many life skills through shared experiences with caregivers.
Through simple interactions, they gradually learn how to:
• handle uncertainty
• observe and learn from others
• regulate emotions
• solve problems together
For many autistic children, these learning experiences can be difficult.
RDI helps rebuild these developmental pathways through guided interactions between parent and child.
Parents Become the Guides
One of the most unique aspects of RDI is that parents become the primary guides in the child’s development.
Instead of development happening only in therapy sessions, parents learn how to create small everyday opportunities that support growth.
These may happen during simple activities like:
• cooking together
• completing small tasks
• solving small challenges together
Over time, these shared experiences help the child become more confident and adaptable in the real world.
A Different Way to Look at Development
RDI is not focused on quick behaviour changes.
Instead, it supports the long-term development of abilities such as:
• emotional regulation
• flexible thinking
• resilience
• meaningful relationships
These abilities help children navigate an unpredictable world with greater confidence.
Final Thought
At its heart, RDI reminds us of something very powerful:
Children grow best through safe, supportive relationships.
When parents become active guides in their child’s development, everyday moments can become meaningful opportunities for growth.
